Default Stripped quill?? Help!

Might I please ask, from the panel of forum boffins...?

When they speak of a stripped quill, as in a stripped quill buzzer, is this a peacock herl that is stripped between thumb and forefinger or something else?

I am sure there may be many tittering behind their keyboards but I am rather stumped as to what this stripped 'do-dah' is or how I obtain or make them.

What I do know is that they seem to make nice buzzers and a few other flies

Many thanks for any answers forthcoming.

Ben

I am no expert but here we go.

Strip the feather bits off a small feather to leave just the quill then use it to make a body.
When stripping a peacock herl i use a rubber to leave just the quill.

Good luck!

Yes you are right It is peacock herl stripped. The easiest way of stripping it is with an eraser.

Material used is the herl from the top of a large peacock eye feather, use the two your nails from thumb and first fingure by pulling the quill through them or use a pencil rubber to strip the flue from the quill.

And if you dampen the feather first it will come off easier.... tis the same with most things you moisten

Perhaps, but I do prefer a few feathers on those

Thank you for the answer to my question - So, may I use a standard peacock hearl or, as Gerry advises, is the head section the better one to use or does it not really matter that much?

Apologies for the sad questions but I am still learning a bit here

Best wishes
