Default painting hooks

heya

While waiting for my girlfriend to get ready the other night i could not help but notice the fantastic collection of colours her nail varnish comes in and started wondering if i can incorporate it into some flies. There are a couple of hot neon colours and an ice blue one that i think would look great painted onto a hook as part of a buzzer pattern. I tried painting a few hooks tonight by putting a coat on the hook then leaving it for a bit and then coating with SHHAN. After 30mins when i touched the hook the paint would "squidge" in my hands still as if it was wet (it is meant to dry in 2 mins). Has anybody else had success painting hooks with nail varnish and having it stay nicely on the hook? I have repainted the hooks and will leave them until tomorrow to see what happens with a longer drying time.......

p.s if this works then it will pay her back for all the times she has raided my tackle bag for nylon to make bracelets/hang pictures etc etc!

Think you have hit the nail on the head, longer drying time.

I tied up a few teal blue and silver tandems to use in the sea for sea trout and just used silver metallic nail varnish for the bodies, worked a treat.

Put metallic primer on first. Then proper metallic paint. I got mine from a store which sells kits etc for construction and painting. Like a model shop. They should have fluoroescent ranges. I do the butt of green peters tht way!

Hi Lee Majors, I think I may know why the paint on the hook felt squidgy.

Basicly acetone or cellulose paints are what are classed as convertible coatings, they dry by evaporation, not coalescence or polymerization as other coatings do.

Each coating wets up the previous hence the term convertible ( add a portion of the original thinner it converts back to it's liquid form).

So any drying times must be extended

Hope this helps

Sean

One way you could consider is to mask the point/barb in a block of foam, then mask the eye with some tape & spray the rest with "Plasticote" white primer before applying your chosen finish.

I have experemented with this idea...I found that when applying paint or nail varnish then it was easier to use a base coat of Tip-Ex first...it not only lets the outer coat dry but also highlights the colours..

But in the end i never really got a satisfactory result....and resorted to different colour threads under dubbing to help with the colour...

White, Hot Orange and Yellow particullaly effective..

I only ever bother painting the heads of some lures now. Tip ex......the paint (usually hot orange or fluro yellow)...then 2 coats of varnish...

It's about as good as i can get it...but it's not that durable..

Raineys Popper Paints and Varnish; is the best i've found !

thanks guys. The hooks i left overnight are a lot better and the paint has dried fully now. I will give them a couple of coats of varnish and see how durable they are. I will let you know.....

Hi lee heres a few i've done....
I give the hook 3 coats of black allowing 10 mins between each coat. Then 3 coats on the head 5 min between each coat. Then i give it 1 coat of express finish cosmic flash. Finaly 1 or 2 coats of hard as nails. You dont even have to use your vise i was originally sticking 5 hooks in a block of foam and doing them all at once but now i use fly clips instead
