Every time my partner colours her hair, (various shades of red so far), i collect a few materials together and join in the fun!

Hair lightening products e.g. blonde, platinum etc are great for removing the natural colouring of fur, hair, feathers such as pheasant tail, peacock herl to make quills etc. Then you can dye them with suitable dyes of your choice.

I did some experiments using turmeric (yellow), and ferrous sulphate (moss killer, known as copperas in the ancient days of material dyeing), years ago and came up with a range of lovely dun colours.
Also used dilute Nitric acid for yellow tints to rabbit blue underfur to produce olive tints, as specified in several ancient accounts of dyeing. Had to sign a special form, and is probably unavailable now as it is part of the Nitroglycerine formula.
For similar reasons, i was denied picric acid. Picric seems to still be available in Ireland tho!

I gave up trying to convert lead into gold years ago tho!
