Default Window Kills ??

We get somewhere between 5 and 10 little birds fly into the windows and die every week It is such a shame . Today it has been 2 male chaffinches but we get all sorts each week .
Question: Can their feathers be used for any flies ??? I know they are very small feathers but surely they have some use ???
Some of the colours are amazing , nothing like you will ever get with any dye .

Yep I suppose , but it is a shame all the same . Atleast more are being saved than killed by feeding the hundreds that come here each day

It's usually caused by a 'tunnel effect' where the birds can see through two windows. I have it at here too.

A sparrowhawk succumbed one day and I was beside myself with guilt, I've put a blind on one of the windows now to try and lessen the illusion.

How do you get so many, have you got a bird feeder hanging from your living room light fitting

Spiders is the use that springs to mind. When out walking the dogs I'm always picking up feathers from sparrowhawk kills. Mostly these are tit, finch and blackbird feathers but at this time of year there are a few fieldfairs and redwings being taken. All of these make excellent spider hackles. For the very smallest feathers you have to split the thread and spin the feather in that way (somebody who knows more about fly tying could probably explain it better!) as the stem is just too weak to wind in the normal way. Dove breast feathers have a lovely pinkish sheen and they make a nice spider too.

Don't put them in with the rest of your feathers Danny before you freeze them and give them a spin in the microwave. Incase any mites are on them.

An example of a small finch feather spider (size 16).

The Unfortunate Finch and Yellow

It has all the structural integrity of a wet tissue but as it takes about 60 seconds to tie and uses only an inch of thread and one (free) feather it is hardly the end of the world if it only lasts a day
