Default which flies- for an absolute beginner?

my starter kit has just arrived and have made an attempt on 2 flies so far. Can someone give some advice on which flies I can tie with the limited gear I have in the kit? I have:
a pheasant tail
black indian cock cape
indian hen cape (brown and black)
golden pheasant head
various colours of electric dubbing
threads, hooks and varnish
many thanks

Why not start off with some spiders just thread and a hackle very easy and will catch you a lot of fish, then start adding materials when you get your proportions right.Have fun and post some photos the guys on here will keep you right.

Default Which flies?

Pheasant tail nymph springs to mind. (I am also a newbie to tying my own!)
Lots of spiders, (only take thread and a feather), Numerous types of nymphs.
Have a look on the list of SBS on here and go through them, to see what you can match with the materials. I tend not to worry too much if I don't have the exact material to hand and experiment with anything I can find to resemble those shown. At this moment I am only developing the techniques and skills so am not too bothered if I make a mistake.

How about a black pennell
Tail: Golden pheasant tippets
Rib: silver oval/wire
Body: black floss
Head hackle: Black cock

If you can master this fly you will save your self alot of heartache and materials.Use it as a stepping stone.

Once you have this mastered, add a wing and it opens up a whole book of flies because alot of flies have the same make up.
Tail, rib, body, wing, and head hackle. After you have mastered the wing add a palmared hackle and away you go again

If you can get a couple of lessons its money well spent.

This mite look odd but if your going after rainbows you could do one of these, simple to tie but highly effective on the rainbows.

Just take a piece of black foam, i used a piece of my old neoprene waders...and tie it on hook...tie it on short of the eye of hook and wind thread over it to form body and pull longer bit back from rear of hook and tie down at head as seen in pic.

Good luck with the tying

Geordie.

Just another thought on this, started my fly fishing on rivers and pops showed me how to tie a fly, simple little pattern to tie...some white hackle fibers for a tail grey thread for the body and a grey pigeon hackle at head, he called it an iron blue......easy to tie but it took me a few goes to get them right mind, but i was willing to learn and still am today....the more you tie of the same patterns seems to become easier as you go along, i tried to rush in and tie every fly i seen but i soon learned to take my time and concentrate more on what i was catching on.

Well thats how i started and hear is the wee iron blue that caught more wild brown trout for me and pops than any other fly we used on the rivers.

Simple wee pattern but as i said works well.

Tight lines,

Geordie.
