Default Where do I start??

This might sound silly but I need some advice as to what Fly Tying materials to start off with. I am having to start from scratch and buy everything, bit by bit. Was wondering if I should buy a starters kit or should I buy the materials seperate? If so the latter which materials should I buy, so much and I dont know where to start.

There is not one particular fly I want to tie I just want to have a selection of materials so I can tie various flees. Is there materials/threads that are commonly used in the tying of alot of flies?

I have tied a few flies before and enjoy it and want to get back into it again. So any suggestions welcome.

Thanx Debs x

Why would you want to tie flies? You don't even go fishing

Nice one Debs , good to hear you giving it another crack

From what I hear starter kits have their place but are not all that good really .

Gerry put a list together after I told him what sort of thing I wanted to tie and I had a look at the list and had a think on what items to get , then bought it all

I know what you mean though about where to shop as there are just so many options out there , I have been given a few links in pm to some good sites that are fast and reliable .

So many nice things , so little cash ........

I did it different to you Debs, I saw a fly I wanted to tie and baught the materials to tie it. I then saw another fly and baught the materials for that and so on and so on and eventually the materials build up and start to overlap.

Do you have a vice (jesus its so hard not to double entendre with you!). A couple of pheasants tails and a hares mask, a peacock herl, is a good start. You dont need to get a kit.
What are your favourite patterns?

When I came back to tying I bought a kit and was disappointed with the low quality of the materials, so much so I've binned or given most of them away to new tyers so's they can duff flees without wasting good gear.

Vices and tools don't have to be top of the range ( a ceramic bobbin holder is a must ) as is a good pair of scissors.

Go for good quality feathers, dubbing and thread. Danny's post is good advice.

Flygirl,

Learn one fly at a time. Here is my suggestion:

Buy: Vice, scissors, hackle pliers, bobbin holder

Thread - just buy olive to start.

One of the most effective dry flies is really simply tied - seals fur body and 3 turns of hackle clipped underneath.

For that you need Kamasan b160s, sizes 14 and 16.

seals fur - black, olive, orange will do to start

grizzle genetic cape (hen).

Once you've tied 3 of each size you'll know how to dub a body and hackle a fly. You'll also have a great start when the trout are on top.

Next you can add in pheasant tail legs and make a hopper and take it from there.

Hi Debs, there is normally quite a lot of fly tying materials being sold in the classifieds and you may pick up some bargains to get you started.
