Tis a bit of a job to know where you are with your tying but seeing you used to live where you did you might consider investing in Trout and Salmon Flies of Scotland by Stan Headley who also per chance posts here.

It is available from Amazon

Steve Kale put me onto Charlie Craven basic fly tying book. Its anything but basic, except for the fact that it starts at the beginning and embeds good techniques in your fly tying, its fair to say I have a way to go.

Most of the patterns are American river flies which should translate to the Uk. If you learn good techniques then you can tye anything!

Happy tying

Andy

Peter Gathercole's fly fishing bible is quite good and has patterns which cover all of the techniques you'll need from basic to advanced with salmon patterns as well.

Oh dear.

Presumably since you call yourself Wye Wizard, you might have an interest in Welsh patterns?

Rivers too!

Orange Otter

Dictionary of Trout Flies - Williams

Fly Fishing - Watson

Soft Hackled Fly - Nemes

I wouldn't have thought an American book was the obvious first choice myself.

Is that the Stan Hedley who has kept us all engrossed on the edge of our seats in the journals these last past few decades with sedgehogs and the like?

Tight lines to you now [COLOR="Silver"]

I ordered Charlie Craven's Basic Fly Tying: Modern Techniques for Flies That Catch Fish from bestbooksdirect on Amazon on the 14th and it was posted on the 15th so you probably have some chance if getting your purchase.

You won't regret it, the techniques are what's improtant. Charlie explains the reason behind everything he does and has some very simple solution. For example the way he ties in wire ensures that it sits underneath the shank of the hook and its so easy to do. I have been tying for a good number of years and I picked up a lot of good pointers.
