Default buzzers - breather material

So. Following on from the "buzzers with breathers" thread (but not hijacking it, you'll note ) there was a suggestion that if you use a floating material for the breathers at the head the buzzer will fish "right way up". Polyprop was suggested for sinking patters, or ye old polistyrene (sp?) ball for suspender buzzers.

My question is about this polyprop stuff. What is it? Had a quick look round but can't identify it. Is it sold under some brand name or other? I have some antron (recently purchased for tying shipmans) but as that sinks (very slowly - I checked) I can't imagine that's the polyprop stuff referred to.

Cheers.

Neil

Neil,

Don't think it is mate,

I use AeroDry Wing, in White and Grey, creates a sort of suspender buzzer if you like.

Tie it with approx 7-8mm protruding from the head of yer buzzer, although it looks nothing like the natural, it sinks ever so enticingly!

Polypropylene I believe.

Do a search for this material and you should find plenty.

Hi shpiel.. assuming you are wanting to keep the buzzer pattern relatively imitative by adding a mere whisp of material to suggest the breathers - then in terms of bouyancy, it matters not one jot what that material is. Any positive bouyancy gained at all by the use of polyprop will be completely insignificant. Conversely, even if you used strands of a metal based (e.g. 'quick descent') dubbing, this would not make the buzzer sink head first. You will not affect the combined weight, and streamlined (therefore quick sinking) nature of the rest of the hook/dressing, either positively or negatively, by the addition of such a tiny amount of material.
If the attitude of the fly is affected by the addition of breathers it is simply due to the addition of drag.... the weight of the materials being pretty evenly distributed means that the attitude is then determined by shape/bulk.

Try a tiny pinch of white marabou for your breathers.

Lureflash used to make it, it's called Polypropylene Floating Yarn. I use it instead of CDC for suspender buzzers, it's much more durable.

Tommy, Lureflash DO NOT make it, they buy it in & re-sell it.

Lathkill also re-sell it, as do most specialist tying supply companies.

Niche of Chelmsford import & sell both retail & wholesale "siliconized poly-pro. yarn" which is slightly more buoyant.

Soft white cock hackle fibres are very good indeed for this as they move individually & more naturally than any man-made fibre, they can be waterproofed with "Watershed" or similar if needed without sacrificing their "action"

As I stated in the original thread....for me its polyprop floating yarn for the reasons I listed. Unusually, I totally disagree with Mr Scratch on this one. A buzzer rises and drops, head up. If you give it a thorax of lead wrap its going to go down like a guy in an aqualung and rise as naturally as a trout with a hook in its tail. There again, if he fancies having a crack at some Corrib trout, late March 2010 I'd be delighted to sit in a boat with him and be enlightened by the technique.
Were not talking of buzzers tied on size 6 or 8 carp hooks here I assume.....my reference was to size 12s and 14s to match the hatch tied on standard grub hooks. That's what has worked very successfully for me and some notable anglers I tie for but I would always consider other options and / or try anything that might improve my catch rate.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one then George. There must be some phenomenaly bouyant poly yarns out there if they are bouying up a buzzer.
