Default american patterns in the uk ...

While searching for sites on realistic fly tying patterns, i found a site in the states that has some attractor patterns that have taken my fancy. not realistic patterns.

but what i am wandering is would these American patterns work here in the UK or a waste of time tying some up ?.
and how easy would it be to obtain these materials or UK alternatives.

the patterns i would like to tie up are -

Feted Green

Hook , mustad 3399 size 6
tail , green goose quill
tag , red floss
body , green silk floss
hackle , green hen
wing , green goose quill

Silver Ghost

hook, Mustad 3399 size 6
tail, barred mandarin duck flank
body , peacock herl
rib , oval silver tinsel small
throat , grizzle hen
wing , black tipped grey turkey tail

Quack doctor

hook , Mustad 3399 size 6
tail , red duck quill
body, silver tinsel
throat , red hen hackle
wing , light mottled turkey

Kinross

hook Mustad 3399 size 6
tail , barred mandarin flank
body , olive green silk floss
rib , silver maylar tinsel fine
throat , olive green saddle
wing , dark mottled turkey

Hi James,

You'll get all of those materials here though I am not so sure about the mandarin (but that's probably my lack of experience). But having found a picture on line I would say that yellow-ish hackle fibres would do fine?

I am just starting to look more at streamers too, with a bit of encouragement from the lads on Deeside, and reckon those that you have listed will work as well as any other. Although it seems a good heavy fly can be useful to create a splash to stimulate a fight or flight response in a trout you are specifically targeting and for this, heavy fur is best, it seems (zonker-y stuff).

But I think that there are fisher's boxes and tyer's boxes. The former having just a few sensible patterns in a range of sizes and the latter a mish mash reflecting what you felt like tying!

I would have said the hooks are too big a few months ago but now have bigger in my box! The one thing about them though is that they can create quite a hole in a smaller fishes mouth so you might want to debarb them and/or be targeted in where you are casting to? I'm sure you'll have had that experience where a trout takes a fly just smaller than itself . . .

Hope that's some help,

Andy

Of course they will work!

Why restrict yourself to streamers.

Why not search for one of my favourite patterns which can work a treat.

Here is a clue!

Hi James

Ive found Zuddlers very effective, when tied in "shocking" pink ! Not really used other colours yet.

If a fly is good from whatever country it will work on any fish that wears an adipose fin. I have always been attracted to a fly that "travels well" not the one season wonders but ones that stand the test of time.
Give me a GRHE, Greenwell, Stewarts Black Spider or the American Adams & we will take fish anywhere in the world.

Default Darned interesting thread.

I can't speak to the above flies, but I can assure you a lot of us PNW Guys/Gals use AS patterns for Steelhead that we've gotten off UK based boards.

Neither fish nor their tastes respect borders either political or geographic, why on earth should they ?

arkle i am not suggesting fish avoid patterns from other countries.
And really i could have just went ahead bought the materials and tied a few of each up and asked the fish what they thought.

But as i am new to fly tying i wanted to see if patterns from across the pond worked here also as you dont learn if you dont ask questions.
and who knows maybe i was also hoping some of the lads on here may have used / come across the patterns above.
to be perfectly honest one pattern the " Kinross " i purely want to tie because it has the same name as my town lol.
sad i know, but i am a fly tart.

just had a look at the zuddler pattern and it looks like i would waste more deer hair than i would actually use lol.

I'm sorry if my abbreviated reply caused you any offence, & I was unaware of the degree of experience that you mentioned. It was not intended to be accepted that way.

I guess after tying & teaching tying for some 40+ years there may be times when a degree of cynicism can set in. Over the years here & on quite a few other forums I've either helped, or at least tried to help many 100's of tyers of all levels of experience. What I'll do, if you want; is to call your landline & guide you through a lot of the things that will be of help to you. Just p.m. me your number & suitable day/time & if you can be online with pen/paper to hand it could save you a lot of time.
