The original Yellow Owl was a Loch Leven wet fly. The pattern consisted of:-
Tail - A few fibres of dark partridge hackle
Body - Primrose yellow floss
Rib - A heavy cotton thread in black (tying thread being too fine).
Throat hackle - Dark Partridge.
Wing - Strips of pale hen pheasant wing feather.
The name derives from the local name of the fly that hatches in great numbers of Loch Leven.
