Default Yellow Owl

Hi,

I have only seen this fly tied as a CDC shuttlecock. Are there any other ways of tying it ?

Nigel

Hi Nigel,

Other ways that I have it tied are a CDC Hopper Version, and as a Snatcher.

There are probably others, but I like these two variants.

Carl,

Thanks for the info. I have some yellow owl shuttlecocks in my box so I think I will try tying it as a hopper !

Hi!
Yip, specifically an F/Fly hopper and use a little natural hares lug around the head to finish! Another option is just a simple unweighted buzzer or adapting the same colours/materials into a spent spinner pattern for caenis.

The original Yellow Owl was a Loch Leven wet fly. The pattern consisted of:-

Tail - A few fibres of dark partridge hackle
Body - Primrose yellow floss
Rib - A heavy cotton thread in black (tying thread being too fine).
Throat hackle - Dark Partridge.
Wing - Strips of pale hen pheasant wing feather.

The name derives from the local name of the fly that hatches in great numbers of Loch Leven.
