Default Salmon flies

Any of you guys tie salmon flees as well as the troot flees? I'm giving it a go whilst having a break from the usual range of dabblers, nymphs, dries and hooooge whacking lures!

I'm using a needle/tuble fly adapter for the vice but have a problem using copper tubes with a ready fitted plastic sleeve, how do you stop the tube revolving on the sleeve and the stop the dressing unravelling? Is it possible to take the sleeve out (the sleeve has flared ends) and fit afterwards?

Also do you fit a second sleeve over the back of the tube to hold the hook like the rutland buzzer/friendly tube?

I need the tips guys otherwise this will drive me to drink!

Cheers
Hagrid

Hi,

I had the same problem with the spinning tubes. The Best thing for holding tubes is the HMH tube fly vice from sportfish...its expensive but worth it for sure!

Once you have tied the tube you slip a small amount of silicon tubing over the rear so it covers about half the shank for the tube hook.

Hope that helps
Tom

hi hagrid,
try putting your silicone tubing, on to the rear of your copper tube before putting it on your pin. then push it tight against your vise . if this doesn't help try and get a tapered pin you can also get felting needles some people file down old knitting needles also hope this helps
regards Tam

I also had the same problem when trying to tie salmon flies for the first time. Out of frustration I knocked up the vice below at work to combat the problem which works well.

It holds about 3mm of the tube which is ample to get a good grip.

I asked a similar question here. with a couple of interesting answers.
