Default Smelly hares mask

Bought a veniards hares mask and the colour variations between light and dark are really good. My problem is it stinks, I have had it in the freezer to kill anything off in case and it looks clean. No matter where i keep it it drives the dog mental, she can find it anywhere and stands guard no matter where it is. I remember being given the odd hare now and again to eat and when preparing them there was quite a strong smell from them even though they were really fresh. What can i do to keep the smell down a wee bit, its ok in the sealed bag, its just when i take it out to use. I could just go and buy another but the markings are really good on this one thats why i bought it.

Mine stink as well, but it's just the mothball stuff that smells in mine.

Wash it Campbell in mild soap and warm water and let it dry naturally. Also check it out for fat or any meat residue which you should remove.

Hi Alberto, I was thinking of doing that but did not know if it would be ok, the skin at the back is hard it may have excess fat or meat on it, do I just try and scrape it off when its wet. Its a good mask I like the colours, it makes cracking flies. Thanks for getting back

Hope you and yours have a great festive season when it comes ( I know you will )

my veniards natural mask stinks also- as if its off- not just mothballs, then olive dyed ones have no smell and then hares fur i prepped and dried myself is as sweet as a daisy so i think the problem is with the way they have been prepped. i added some moth balls to the packet to try to mask the odour but it still smells ripe.

Send it back Campbell. It shouldn't stink. I'm just in the process of swapping a hen neck that I bought at the show... smells like a thousand year old butchers block! The ratailer was fine about it.
It stinks because it hasn't been cleaned/dried or both propperly... washing will only exacerbate the problem.
