Default A pair of Sedgehogs

Here are a couple of sedgehogs I've knocked up. I've had a couple of goes and they just don't turn out right. Does anyone have any tips (I know strip the hooks and start again) - I can't get the hackled part of the muddler head right.

I can never remember which is a sedgehog and which is a hedgehog - I thought a hedgehog was the one without the muddled head, but it may just be me getting muddled!

The original hedgehog had a muddler head, and if my memory serves me right it was our very own hogorks uncle Sandy who invented it

Here is a SBS I posted on here about 5 years ago, may help.

not much wrong with those wf. try another pinch of deer hair before making your muddler head, or even better forget the muddler and just use dubbing. thats what i normaly do. a sedgehog has a head hackle were as a hedgehog doesnt. so this must be a muddled hedgehog.

Just looked at the SBS Gerry, thanks. Also thanks Thorfinn. It looks so easy when you look at them well tied, I think I see where I'm going wrong.

Then again I just reckon I've might have been sent some dodgy deer hair

Cheeky bu55er
Bad tradesman always blames his tools

Seriously though, it does take time and the more you do the more you will get used to handling the deer hair and also what sort of quantities to use at the various stages. Use of the thread is very important when tying these and what pressure to apply when tying the various sections will come through time, keep at and it will come.
Cheers
Gerry

Not much wrong with those flies, WF. Suggest you leave more deer hair up top, cut it so it looks like a sedge wing.
Here's one I tied earlier; OK, it isn't a sedge/hedge hog, it's a muddler, but it may help you to get the trimming right. This one has caught several fish, so has had a secondary trimming by little brown trout teeth. It's an improvement.

Keep on tying, practice makes perfect, though perfection isn't technical excellence, it's about breathing life into your flies.
Or as Freddie Mercury used to say, 'It's a kind of magic .......
