Default Boiling Fritz?

Simple question,

Myth or not...

Can I boil fritz to change the colour or make it more translucent? If so whats the best method?

Arden,

Simply done, bring some water to the boil, drop the fritz in, and dont forget to time it, you may want to reproduce the shade, or "washed out" colour as it known in the future.

Thanks Carl,

Now, I presume when you state 'time it'...this will allow me to know for the next time if I need to make another batch.

On average...what you talking - Pasta time or Spud time

Will my saucepans be for the bin after??

My opinion is no you can't make a fritz more translucent by boiling it, the translucence is in the makeup of the fritz - ie the plastics what percentage of polyester and nylon etc etc.

If you mean can you boil ready dyed fritz to make the colour more washed out then I would say possibly slightly but mostly because by giving some dyed fritz a good bath you will lighten the colour anyway due to excess dye (depending on how well washed out the fritz is). Let us know the results anyway if you try it although I wouldn't build your hopes up too much

With regards to your cooking pan - I would say don't use it for cooking again!. Use an old/perished pan or mixing bowl or something as if theres any excess dye it will come out in the water in the pan and the pan even if its stainless steel and supposedly not pouros it will take some dye into its pores which could come out next time your boiling the spuds

Would agree with Sam on this one Arden, I should have said that you can't change the material density, or its translucency, but you can change its shade.

With regards to timing, I have 'boiled' some of Sams Sunburst Orange, (Sorry Sam), for 3mins, and turned a nice 'washed out' shade....(Not that it was overdyed, or wasn't washed within an inch of its life mind, Just fancied an experiment)Sometimes, it can make a difference from fish following your blob, or blob booby into a "take".....

You learn something new everyday, I have never tried boiling fritz already dyed but just predicted it wouldn't change much but obviously it does.

Must have took a bit of boiling to go from my sunburst orange to washed out Bottle up the dye that came out and post it back to me

Arden,

As a wee experiment I nailed a few different colours of fritz to my back fence in June and left them there for the elements to have their wicked way with for 4 months.

I kept checking them every week on so. I kept the originals as a reference. After 4 months there is some difference from the original colours. Ive got a few im looking forward to tying in March on Lene. One in particular is a washed out peach for the daphnia feeders

It doesnt change much mind mate.... As you would be aware, fritz dries lighter than it looks in the solution/bath.

Try 'boiling' some of old Big Reels, aka yours , GM12, you get a nice shade of Sunburst....Paired with some 'boiled' Vampire peach, worked well on Grafham last year.... Something of a difference for the feesh

I tried to replicate Captains 'Washed Out' Fritz for the "Captain Scarlet Blob", but there must be a 'knack' to it, I always end up too light......

Will try that Carl cheers. Yes your right most fritz looks darker when wet.

I have 2 shades of washed out peach for my range next year that look quite fishy.

Re Captains "washed out" fritz - if you want me to match it just send us a sample and I will have a go I'm quite good at matching shades.
