Default Versatility through the sizes.

Apologies if you see this as over-kill, but the in the last thread on the CDC Dun I mentioned the versatility of the pattern and how it transposes well to smaller sizes too.

Here's a couple of shots I added to the website:

CDC Dun #20

Hook: Partridge SLD #20
Thread: 14/0 Sheer, tan
Tail: Coq de Leon
Abdomen: Orvis Spectrablend, brown
Wing: CDC, brown (in split thread)

...alongside its bigger brother:

Small size looks deadly! Quick question dave you gave me the link to river flybox for the step by step on the other thread. How many cdc feathers do you use for the size 10 and how many would you use for the size 20?

Depends on the CDC I am working with, but as a general rule, I'll use two for the #10. This also gives me the option to blend shades if I want to (ofcourse, that opens up the question of dry fly colour being important Moving on...). On the #20 I will still use one whole feather, remembering that this is using fibres from both sides of the stem. I then tie the fly and when I am happy with the wing, any that I haven't used can be easily removed: simply unspin the bobbin and they will slide out easily. Then whip finish.

Am I making any sense?

Yes you make sense Dave. I understand what you mean about blending two colours of cdc i watch marc petitjean do it at the fly fair and the results were excellent seemed to give more 'life' to the fly?!

dave they are fantastic. No overkill seen on my part, post as many as you want! This really is a great template for duns, I'll be attempting a mere form of these with split fibbet tails and biot bodies, and possibly a reverse version if I can manage it we will see!

P.s. what is the difference between the SLD's and SUD's? I thought it was to do with the beaked point but it seems not

SUD: Surehold Upwing Dry (Barbless). Down eye, straight point.

SLD: Surehold Lightning Dry (Barbless) - down eye, a little more pronounced (certainly in the smaller sizes!) and point is upturned slightly.

Both very strong hooks

Cheers,

everytime I see the pics of the packets on shop sites they both appear to have straight points! Very confusing!

Nice "cul de canard"!!

But, it looks like you're rolling your feather around your hook for all of your sizes? Isn't it?

I do this for hooks bigger than size 18, but for size 18 and smaller, I just take a tuft of CDC,

because I think that rolling the feathers is not neat for small flies, but it seems that you do it well!

FF its hackled cdc fibres in split thread rather than a hackled cdc feather- I think this is where you are getting confused? This way the stem of the cdc wont bulk up the hackle so you can get a neat wing/thorax area on smaller flies.
