Forgive my ignorance, but I am trying to find out a bit about Dabblers. I am very new to flyfishing, and am reading as much as I can between fishing outings.
Anyway, Exactly what is a dabbler? They seem to be available in a huge range of colours, but don't seem to be exactly imitative.
Where are they used? How are they fished? They look like dry flies, or are they wet?
Sorry for the stupid questions but I am trying to learn !
Thanks,
Gary.

Gary

A Dabbler is basically an Irish Wet fly with a cloak of Bronze mallard instead of a front hackle. As with all styles of tying each tier has their own interpretation.

They are wet flies usually fished top dropper in the "Loch Style method",
I know, here comes another question..........

Cracker mate. Absolutely class pattern.

You must have had an Irish Blood Transfusion.

So is a dabbler build for dibbling at the edge of the boat before recasting?

Yes and no You can fish them anywhere on your cast . Maybe though the more bushy styles at the top and maybe skinny at point but as with most things in fishing , each to their own . Fish them where you like . Tie them how you like , some use cock while others might use hen . A full cloak wing , 2/3s top wing 1/3 bottom , just wing the top for skinny....etc no hard and fast rules.
The Dabbler style fly is one of the most versatile flies there is IMHO .
