Default Deer hair - which bit of the skin is best

Hi Folks,

Got the offer of a good supply of rather fresh deer hair and just wondered which deer (age/sex) and/or part of the skin supplied the best hair for tying?

(I am sure that this came up a while back but I cannot find it amongst the thousands of results that come up).

Thanks,

Andy

depends very much on the application. Have you seen Chris Helm's video "spinning deer hair"?

first google result;
Tips for selecting deer hair - Choosing the right hair will make your deer hair flies - Comparaduns, EHC´s, Muddlers, bass bugs - much easier to tie. - Global FlyFisher

have a look at all the links on the right hand side, although it has american species it should help a little.

Mmmm,

Not doing too well here for a quick definitive answer but appreciate the suggestions!

Thought the video was online but might invest in it and yeah, found that page, thanks Jonnied, but wasn't sure how well it translates to the UK and our species - probably quite well but as it says on the page "Different regions of North America have different subspecies and each of these deer have their own hair characteristics". Maybe being overtly fussy but unless I can get down at the right time I have to give instructions and it seems a shame to not get the best bits from a kind offer.

Thanks anyway folks,

Andy

understand what you mean andy, if I come accross anything I'll let you know. Perhaps drop Gerry (ruthvenflyfisher) a PM, he dyes his own deer hair im not sure how he gets it supplied but he might be able to help you out.
