Default The (modern) Classics, Shipmans Buzzer

Shipmans Buzzer

Devised by Dave Shipman about 25/30? years ago this is THE modern classic.
This fly, and the style of fishing turned reservoir fishing on its head.
Most people were still trailing lures with the odd angler like Arthur Cove fishing nymphs. This fly changed it all.

  • hook / fine wire wet 16 to 10
  • tufts / white antron
  • rib / medium pearl
  • body / seals fur

I have tied this on a kamasan 175 but this is to heavy, I didnt have any 400s left.

Simple perfection.
The body can be changed with black, ginger, and hot orange favourites.
Other tufts have been used such as CDC and ethafoam, but I still think antron is the best.

Just a superb fly ,the feiry brown is my favorite ,such a simple quick dressing and it does work superbly , classic was one opening day on bewl ,was out with the long departed from these boards Pete west aka brown trout and it went sflat calm just on dusk ,a couple of rises and on went the firey brown shipmans and a moment later some 4 lbs of over wintered bow sipped it down .fish on !

Its just white antron mate, cheap and cheerful and does what it is supposed to.

It's on my "to do" list... as soon as I get some Antron. I assume Antron is less dense than water, so aids buoyancy. True?

Do the breathers have to be white as I have black and orange antron but don't want to spend the money for a spool I would use except for this one fly.

If you have some mylar tube there is the liner some times string which is useless but some has a synthetic fibre thatdoes the Shipmans busser breathers to perfection .
Me I love the feiry brown seals fur with the free stuff I get from the mylar !

White shoe laces are the cheapskates alternative Get cheap ones from tesco's or lop a couple of inches off someones trainers while they aren't looking.

also try tying them with foam breathers, no gink etc needed.
