Default The Classics, Peter Ross

Going to mudddle on with this Classics post after reading some of the replies on the Zulu section.

Peter Ross This pattern is actually a variant of an older pattern, the teal and red.
Killin shopkeeper/ post master, Peter Ross, commisioned this dressing.

Sorry the rib is a wee bit asque and the wing a bit iffy but I had had a couple of glasses of wine
  • hook wet fly 14-8
  • tail GP tippets
  • rib silver wire
  • body 2 parts, rear flat silver, front red seals fur
  • hackle black cock
  • wing well barred teal

In an attempt to appeal to the more modern twist I have included a wee variant.
It is as yet untried, but perhaps it will catch the 50 fish required next season.

Materials are the same as the original but tied on a buzzer hook with the teal wound as a hackle.
Perhaps a couple of tiny jungle cock eyes might jazz it up, what do you think?

Really like that 'snatcher' style. I agree, a couple of JC eyes would set that off nicely. Great potential with that little gem. It really is a 'go to' fly when things start to look a little grim. Nice work, Maharg

I Have no doubt that your variant will catch many a fish. Looks ideal for a place on the top dropper, during a buzzer hatch.

Definitely going into my fly box for next season, That is a fabulous looking beastie right enough.

Here is a nice wee variant of mine that can be good for Broonies & Sea Trout

Click the image to open in full size.

Tying is ok,proportion right. Wing a bit askew but noo bad other than that.
Changes include pearl flat tinsel orange seal fur an orange hen hackle. otherwise as original.
Tight Lines
PS One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the amount of anglers that do not like the original pattern.
It,for me at least is a good attractor & has taken many a good Trout in over 40 years of fishing.

I just couldnt catch a thing on the PR until someone gave me one that had been given the dabbler treatment. The Peter Ross Dabbler is certainly one to try now, especially in brown water lochs,
Cheers Ken
