Default Reccomendation on current vices

Nice problem to have...

I've just taken up tying (5 weeks) and the Goddess told me last night that she thinks I'll stick at it so my Christmas present from her will be a nice new modern vice. She's done her homework and decided the Snowbee Waldron is the one, and do I have any objection?

I'd never considered a new vice at this early stage in my tying and would be happy sticking with my inherited K.F.Odames but with this opportunity.....

I have absolutely no idea what's good bad or indifferent so all constructive comment would be welcome. My tying will be for own use, mainly river fishing for trout /grayling.

Thanks

Nidd

Nidd,

I'm in a similar position although I was looking at a lower budget, as a lesser sum offered by a relative - I'm considering upping the budget by adding to it but unsure if it's worth it?

I'm finding stocking up on kit generally, tools, hooks, materials etc has eaten up nearly half your vice budget in just a few weeks and am beginning to see that quality/right materials are probably more important than the thing holding the hook in place (how about you?).

Don't know if I can justify a really good vice at this stage in terms of my skill level, but also don't want to waste money buying twice in say a year if it was better to go for something better from the start ... currently using a borrowed Anvil Atlas at the mo' and waiting to see what type will suit me best as I settle into it.

Haven't considered the level of spend you're looking at really but might if someone convinces me it will help - that's a big might though, as it only holds a hook after all?

Weaver Scottie appears a good start point at present but horses for courses I guess and if you fancy something nice then why not? Guess others can advise on the actual vice in question?

Keep me posted on your decision making!

Hi Nidd.
Have very little experience in tying, as I am a newboy at it too!
However, I have just bought an Anvil Apex vice, from GROMMIT on these here forums!
I have to say, (with my limited knowledge) I think it is an awesome vice, and for a lot less than the Waldron. the change will buy you a lot of materials
I prefer the lever action on the jaws of the Anvil vice too, and it has a lifetime guarantee, although it seems to be very well made, nice and solid.
i'm sure it will last me a long long time.
Just my 2p worth!
Gary.

to be honest at this early a stage of your tying I would lean more to using your cash on buying the best materials you can get your hands on rather than spending big on a vise, the better materials you use the better your tying will be, then as you progress with things you will have more idea as what you want from a vise, I am sure you will get plenty of other advice shortly from the guys on this site. they seem to be very knowledgable from what I've seen so far and I am sure the advice will be helpful.

Your KF Odames is a perfectly good vice.
However the issue is that she has gone to the effort to do her home work for you!Thats a BIG present by anyones standards.

So be delighted, it's more vice than you will probably ever need, and at least you will know you will never need to upgrade it in the forseable future.

What a gift! You better be thinking long and hard about what to get her.

Totally agree, materials are more use to you at this stage than a flashy vice as you will find that you can easily spend 250 pound on materials if you want to have a fairly comprehensive set of stuff. For example every time I go into a tackle shop I maybe spend 10 pounds so it only takes a couple of major "shops" and you've spent a lot.

Save your dosh and buy materials.

Sorry to post again, but these guys just don't get it, The good lady is offering to buy it for him. He cant turn round and say love I would rather i had the cash.(well he can but I doubt it would go down well).

There is another issue...Speaking from experience as my Mrs bought me a vice for our 1st Christmas together, ten years ago.
Whenever I need to do some tying I can always say..
'well dear I think I will pull your wonderful vice out and make some flies'
And she is really pleased to see that I still get pleasure from it, so flytying is never, ever a problem in our house!

Sorry about that,
Anything from your wife that is
a RELATED TO FLY FISHING
b Related to Flytying or other hobbie, should be greatfully acepted.

As the chance of having one of these items bought for you is very slim so take your chance and run.

Nah, see I diasgree, take the cash in a slimey evasive way ...

...then buy a vice that looks like the 240 quidder for say 100 squids tops and buy all the other stuff as well - you can still pretend to have had the same deal as was offered, unless the wifey is really that smart on fly tying kit (if she is she should be on here)!

WP would be proud as he thinks I've gone soft - I reckon he needs a new vice and 'vice envy' is kicking in!
