As one who has just given up the hobby of tying, after forty years,
What i will miss, is seeing a pattern on the Forum, that really catches your eye,
Then you can just tie it up. now I will have to contact some of the excellent tyers on the Forum,
Which takes more time, but i suppose gives you something to look forward to,
Anyway I must have about 500 flees, but we all know they are the same as clothes, they go out of Fashion.

To be honest, i don't really care if it is or isn't. Sure, corners can be cut to make it more cost effective but i don't treat it as a production line. It's theraputic and at times challenging and i don't think i'd enjoy fishing half as much if i just used shop bought flies.

If i had a spare £20 note, i'd buy materials rather than half a dozen flies or even a subscription to "Trout Slayer"

As one who has tied hundreds of flies, and also purchased when I couldn't be bothered,
It does not bother me, when i catch, if I tied the fly or not,
I get my enjoyment from being out in the fresh air, and meeting fellow anglers, and of course catching the fish,
When it comes to buying flies, as long as they are tied on good hooks and tied well,
I am well pleased.

I find that as one gets older; the eyesight not being as keen as it once was, then a combination of : Tying some that are manageable with spectacles and buying the patterns in small sizes that may be beyond your capabilities! But, I agree with the concept of catching fish on the patterns you've tied yourself; there's nothing like it!

Commercially tied flies have come a long way over the years, today the quality is very good.
For me though, being able to tailor a pattern the way you want to for the job in mind, is the main advantage of tying your own. Flies are a personal thing, they have to look 'right' to us before we can fish them with true conviction.Tying our own means we can give them that wee personal touch that pleases our eye. Apart from that its good fun, I cant imagine not tying my own flies.

Totally agree with you along with the majority of anglers but i still get a huge buzz sharing and catching on flies i've tied. Just my personal preference.

I agree with Jimmy
It would be less hassle to buy and prob cheaper but with some of the fantastic dyings from the likes of the guys selling here on the forum its hard to beat chossing the shade of olive or the shade of whatever you want

To be honest I think if you tie flies hoping to save money then you are doing it for the wrong reason. Personally I love working with the different colours and being the saddo I am, I have taken days off work just to tie in daylight
