Default tying on question

Hello everyone, might seem like a strange question but i would like to know how you tie on thread, what i mean is do you wind away from yourself (clockwise) or towards yourself (anti clockwise). I've tried clockwise but can't get the hang of it.

I normally wind away from myself, but I will occasionally reverse the thread by throwing in a half hitch or two and then winding the other way to achieve a particular effect, such as lifting a buzzer cheek into position on the far side of a fly. I will then tie a reverse whip finish.
Cheers,
Angus

Most tyers seem to work away from themselves, I guess its easier to combat torque (ie twist caused by lashing stuff down). If you work towards yourself the you will struggle to hold material off centre to compensate for the thread pulling it towards you.

Remember that if you rib then you need to work in the opposite direction to ensure that is sits over the underlying wraps.

Hope this is not totally confusing!

Thats what is happening with me, i've got into a habit of tying towards myself, have tried to tie to away from myself but cant get the hang of it, will have to keep at it and eventually i will get used to it.

I taught my self how to tie and always wound the thread anti clockwise. After a few months the local fly dresser held a 1 night tying lesson and promptly made me change direction. Supposed to leave it easier tying in hackles and such.
I can't say I ever really noticed but it was handy enough changing. now I only wind clockwise.
