Default best cape for ...

guys i want to tie some klinks up ,now never having tied a dry fly ,ive always bought them ,dont know why i just seem to get it in my head that if its not perfect it wont catch etc which can lead to blown confidence ,daft i know but thats the way its been ,im fine with spiders ,grubs etc etc ,i have never tied a parachute hackle before and what you see is my very first attempt ,sorry about the flash , pic taken inside

Click the image to open in full size.

so a couple of questions

1/ which cape to tie klinks from 8's to 16's (maybe some 6's aswell)

2/ faults with the above pic ,i can see the head needs to be smaller but what else concerning the parachute hackle ,the tapering body isnt on as im fine with that its the hackle that bothers me and the finishing off ,and ive done that the original way and not with the loop method (which is the better/easier) ??

any tips fault picking will be gatefully accepted

the reason i want to tie them is i am now running low of dries and i want to start with the klinks being a good bring em up fly

never tied a dry send me your addy I'll send you some saddle hackles mate. I use whiting saddles, bronze grade is fine, the ones that phil sells are superb drop him a pm to se if hes got stock.

Failing that get onto the lakeland website. A half cape should be more than enough for a long time!!!!

no worries bruce it is a little overhackled mate, but im sure it would serve as an indicator klink what hooks are you using for it, and have you cranked it? just try fining it down a little - less is more

Default Klinks

Hi Bruce, as Johnnie has said is a little busy on the hackle side i can give you a sbs for a klink if you like? it will help you see how it is done in stages m8
Also the correct hooks to use are Partridge 15bn hooks, but some people use kamsan b100 which are fine! but some people will say it not a klink then but we will not go down that road
Regards Robert

if we are getting really pedantic we could say that the 15bn is the hook for the 'klinkhamer special' so call it a klink by all means mate you're not breaking any rules

looks like ostrich herl, great for smaller spider patterns but a little bit soft and absorbent for dries have a read through this if your interested to know more about klinkhamer specials from the horses mouth;

http://www.ffinternet.com/html/flyty...ies_klink1.htm
(have a look around the site there is also the tying sbs for the fly)

on para hackles I like to finish the fly off under the hackle, as opposed to at the eye, but both are fairly simple with a bit of practice. Have a look through the sbs section on the ukflydressing forum, theres tons of useful stuff on there.

Try to get hold of Ollie Edwards video on big dry flies it details the tying method for Klinkhamers. Good video series, it shows you how to fish the flies as well as tie them

Hi Bruce if you go to nor-vice.com he has a good tube on how to tie a detached body parachute hackled fly complete with post.
If you don't have a nor-vice i'm shure you will find the tube very intresting on how to tie the post and hackle in etc.
Hope this helps and happy tying.

Martin...
