No-Picture SBS for Sedgehog
I got a pm request for this, so I thought I'd give you a shuftie.
I don't do pics, so tough luck!
1. Tie in the thread at the eye of the hook & take it back to the bend.
2. Tie in a small bunch of deer hair as a tail with a few turns of thread.
3. Taking the thread onto the bare shank, dub a very small bunch of seal's fur onto the thread, then take the thread back onto the deer hair and bind the deer's hair fibres with the s/f.
4. Take a slightly thicker bunch of deer hair and tie in over the seal's fur.
5. Dub the thread and cover the roots of the deer hair bunch, remembering to take the thread off the hair roots and onto the bare shank before applying the s/f to the thread. This will stop the hair flaring.
6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 until there is a slight gap left at the head of the fly.
7. Tie in a small hen hackle (the tips should reach the hook point only) and wind 2-3 turns over the roots of the last deer hair bunch.
8. Whip-finish & done.
Remember that the seal's fur is used to control the spread of deer hair. When you wind each turn of dubbing stroke the s/f back over the hair roots.
Also, the thread will tend to drag the deer hair to one side of the hook. To avoid this place the untyed-in deer hair slightly 'upwind' of the top of the hook. If you are right handed the deer hair will tend to drift to the back (hidden) side of the fly. Place the untyed-in deer hair slightly your side of the top of the hook. The tightening turns will locate the hair right on top of the hookshank, just where you want it.
