Default Simple Caddis Grub

I have noticed that a lot of us are now getting about tying flies for the next season and there are a lot of tiers who are starting out.

So I thought I would show you a very simple caddis grub that can be used for both trout and grayling. For those of you into French Nymphing, then this will be a fly for one of your droppers.

Both trout and grayling, especially grayling, grub around on the bottom for upwing fly nymphs and caddis grubs. Grayling have their mouth parts adapted to doing it and during the next few months caddis grubs will become a large part of their diet.

This pattern is easy and effective.

Hook: Viravas 2200BL in sizes 12, 14 & 16
Bead: Black Tungsten 2mm (but relative to hook size)
Thread: Yellow 8/0 UNi thread
Tag: Brown partridge feather tips (5-6 will do)
Body: 1mm strip of Virtual NYmph Flexi Body - Light Olive
Legs: Brown partridge feather tips (same as tail)

You can experiment with this. For example why not try fluorescent pink thread with clear Flexi Body. Makes a great blood worm which is another staple part of a graylings diet

always appreciate your flies phil- they are real 'fishing' flies. I'm not a fan of the varivas 2200BL though.

good to see a mention of bloodworm as a foosource for river fish, something i often over look.
