Default What materials will i need! ?

I have a fly tying kit but its mostly just maribou and fritz type stuff, i am wanting to start tying flies for the river such as ,teal, blue and silver, weighted nymphs, and also i would like to tie still water flies aswell ( lures: damsels, boobys, dancers e.c.t) If someone could give a list of materials that i would need, to tie the above and a few others.

Cheers Liam

find the recipes of the flies you want to tie and buy that material. this will be a building block for more patterns that require the same material. new flies = new recipes = new materials

have a look through the step by steps to find the lists of materials you fancy. If I were you start off with a few simple flies that include just a couple of basic fly tying techniques.

Here's a suggestion
Look up on you tube the Learn Fly Tying For Beginners with David Cammiss series pick out the flies you want to tie and note down the recipes he gives you.
For your river nymphs you will want some copper wire, lead wire.(or gold/tungsten beads) beads Some gold tinsel, Cock pheasant tails (the older the bird the better if you have a choice) a hares ear or hares Mask. Some peacock herl, Some cheap red game feathers for tails and basic hackles. Some black hen hackles.
That should get you started on PTNs, Gold ribbed hares ear, Diawl bachs, Black and peacocks and a variety of other simple nymphs and wets.
If you want to do the marabou start by buying olive or green which will be ideal for damosel nymphs, dog nobblers and wooly buggers amongst a host of other flys, that as a stream fisherman I shouldn't know about!

And dont get too hung up on thread colour.brown or olive and black in 8/0 is all you need to start.

hope that helps. If your stuck for a material you can usually substitute something else...just ask the forum.

Ps for hooks for the river nymphs you want to be 14's down to 18's, the natural insects they imitate are really that small.
