Default Fly tying gameplan

I notice that there's a good 40 people on the Fly Tying section at the time of writing (Sunday 6pm ish / mid November ‘09).

It's dark and damp out there tonight and if other people have a fishing spot that is anything like mine this afternoon, which I viewed while dog walking, then they’ll probably confirm that the water is looking like strong tea and probably just plain dangerous to go paddling in ... I am fairly certain that this is the start of traditional 'tying time'.

How about someone really savvy suggesting 6 essential flies to tie for the novice in various scenarios (assume the intermediates and especially experts don’t need this pointer) – I realise that it will depend on many variants but if someone can give the likes of me a pointer on the way to progress using the KISS principle, then much appreciated.

Earlier today I found myself on Entomology sites (American), classic fly tying sites (seem to be mainly American) – various fly supplier’s sites (not knocking that as it strikes me that for £20 I can save a lot of headaches).

In order to get on the right road for progression in the sport, I should at least go for a proportion of my own flies in the box; if time ever gives up as my adversary and becomes a protagonist, things might change … but in the meantime, any suggestions on a real world approach would be appreciated.

If that sounds complicated how about a top three or an essential to be included, or one to avoid wasting too much time on in the early days?

If you're going for imitative patterns, then the 6 most useful sub-surface ones are as follows:

Buzzers (various colours - black being most useful), damselfly nymphs, corixa, shrimps, caddis pupae/larva and a general-purpose olive nymph suggestive pattern such as a GRHE, Collyer's green () or even PTN.

That would be plenty for anyone.

Where do you fish? River, Lake?

What flies have you been using? Have you had success on them? These would be a good starting point.

Above everything i would say local knowledge is essential, therefore it would be pointless of me who fishes the Aberdeenshire Don, suggesting patterns for your local river.

I started tying this winter too and have been concentrating on the patterns i use anyway. Have found it very rewarding.

Tight lines
Paul

Ah Woz, broad synagogue here mate - any input is good input (may regret that comment)!?!

Paulfish - my local small stream in SW england - mini Browns and Grayling. To be honest, I'd like to hear what's going on out there - no need for complicated answers, if you have one or two you really like, then I'm sure a few at least would love to hear about it - no need to worry if it works for me or not, as reckon most people can work out the demographics.

Steve C - many thanks, what Dries do you like?

Thanks guys!

SK,

Checked a few quickly - loads of detail in the tying descriptions, much appreciated - will study those.
