Default Veniard Fl. Orange Dye

Has anyone used this? I just tried it and it took forever for the dye to take and for the feathers to turn even remotely orange. Before I start playing with mixtures etc is it normal for it to take a very long time (>30 minutes) for this dye to take?

What were you dying and was it pre-soaked/degreased?

Pheasant secondaries and some bronze mallard. I'd left them to soak in water with some Venpol for a couple of days. Perhaps they need more aggressive degreasing. Plenty of vinegar was added.

The Hen Pheasant seconderies should take the dye no problem but bronze mallard is different and being a duck feather carries a lot of oil. Also fluo orange when dyed is a lightish shade of orange, for a stronger shade try adding a touch of fluo red to the orange or for a strong shade of fire orange mix fluo red and coral 50/50. Venepol should degrease the bronze and half an hour in hot water and venepol should be suffice.

Cheers guys. The cock pheasant finally turned orange but the mallard only went to yellow. I'll have another crack.

How much dye per litre of water do you use?

Hi there,

I agree with all replies so far.

Basically the veniard fl orange is just a mix of fl yellow and fl pink - better to mix your own orange I find. You will find that you can only use the dye bath once with a fl orange ready mix as a lot of the time as basically if all the fl orange is exhausted into the materials in the bath you will be left with a pink dye bath. Simply because the yellow is sucked up first and the stronger pink remains. You can actually add some fl yellow to the bath to get your fl orange back again and reuse the bath. Sorry if I am confusing you

Its just trial and error really, the more you practice the better it gets.

Please let us know how it goes with the feathers.

Sam

Thanks guys. On a more boring colour, any tips for dyeing hen dun. Is the Veniard Blue Dun okay or should I be thinking a mix of Veniard or Jacquard dyes?
