Default biots

I'm looking for good long thin biots for making dry fly bodies and a few other ideas Ive got , the problem being Ive found most goose biots are either to short or to wide meaning the body just ain't what it should be, can anyone help me out with this dilemma.

I bought some at the bffi from Pat at Flytec.

They come as two whole feathers so you can chose to use the short or long biots depending on what you do.

£2.80 per pack and lots of colours.

Hope this helps.

Turkey biots may be what you are after - they are bigger and more translucent so you'll need to pick a thread colour to match (or go for some nice blends?).

I use goose biots a lot. In general, though, I would say they're not suitable for flies above #14. For larger flies you'll need turkey biots. If you're tying dry flies then you'll likely want more natural colours such as those from Spirit River or Wapsi. See here:

Turkey biots I prefer for dries but goose biots are okay for some applications.

What colour biots are you after? I have some goose biots that are very large and the best feather quality I have come across in all the best solid colours. If I can help send me a PM.

Sam

Default Seagull Biots..and they are free!

There is a very nice biot on the leading edge of seagull primaries. It is a bit more fragile than the goose or turkey but has a good length and nice edge to it. In natural grey it gives a good body on small mayflies and I presume it can be dyed as goose is.
Look in your local playing fields for reasonably clean feathers as ragged ones tend to be very fragile indeed.

Cheers
