Nice fly John perfectly tied one of my favorite early season River and Loch patterns .
Not used much now a day's by the younger Brigade but still a great fly and fish catcher Regards Dave

Davie you may be pleased to hear that i am one youngster that will be using the blae and black along with other traditional patterns. and i have started to tie traditional patterns.

so far i have Teal blue and silver , Dunkelds, Alexandra. and got a lot more to go lol.

Yes a great wee fly. One variant I have used is to tie it with a red ibis (sub) for the tail, everything else the same.

maharg that sounds like a nice variant that i will have a go at tying once i get some grey mallard ordered.

Tied and tried all the variants but the original was and still is my favorite for early season (through April to mid May) size14 Blae & black ...brilliant wee fly Use a cast of 3

Hi James thats great that you are fishing with the old traditional s . There great flies I went off them for a while and started fishing with all the modern stuff . Then I went back and started using them again I have had some good bags even on the small fisheries magic stuff Regards Dave

I think traditional flies are making a wee come back, especially with anglers getting fed up with big lures, even these appear to be overtaking by mini lures tied in 10s and 12s,
in the summer i have also seen a few anglers including myself fishing for Bows with Spider patterns,
The blae and black in size 12s and 14s is an excellent fly to have in your box, especialy when there is a hatch of black Midges.
