Default More stumble than bumble

I love all the dabblers and bumbles some of you boys do, so thought I'd have a go. So, here is my first attempt at a claret bumble from the pattern by GB in this months FF&FT

Click the image to open in full size.

Please excuse the lack of jay, but only had guinea fowl.
Also didn't have any red gp tippet but nowt a red sharpie couldn't fix

any comments welcome

cheers,
Squeeks

I am sure Teuchtar, Scrath, Oakham Orange, Wee Jimmy etc will give you their thoughts. For my tuppence worth, the tail is a little short and the rib a bit wide, But what the fecck do I know.
A good tie.

I'd go along with that. The rib in particular needs seeing too. Far too fat. Basically a nice tie though

Cheers for the comments chaps. That's why I come on here to get some top advice. You were far too nice on my first fly!

I've just had a look again at the GB article again and his "original CB" and I agree the rib is too wide, and it needs more seal fur, but I also noticed that I need a lot more hackle! That's mostly to do with the cheap capes I have currently in these colours - though I felt my credit card twitch last night when I saw Saracen's capes
The tail in GB's pattern was listed as something like "short and stumpy", and if you don't have any dyed tippets, then he suggests you "scribble on them with a red pen like a 3 year old"

ok I made the last bit up

Jeezzzz for a first attempt thats very good.

Sometimes it helps me to tie in two ribs, the gold one which is wound anti clockwise up the body before the hackle is wound down then a second rib of 2-3lb mono is wound clockwise catching in the hackle. Takes absolutely nothing away from the fly as the mono rib is virtually invisible. and stops the flat rib trapping hackle.

Hope you understand

The only other thing that I can think of in terms of an improvement would be to take at least one full turn of the palmer hackles at the shoulder of the fly. This supports the blue jay and creates a better balance to the look of the fly. That and a smaller head.

aw the best...
