Default CDC emerging buzzer query

I'm trying my hand at tying with CDC for the first time. My first attempt was a size 12 emerging buzzer, tied on a Kamasan buzzer/shrimp hook, and it looked ok. I tested it out by dropping it into a pint of water. It went straight through the surface tension and sank.

I wonder if I didn't use enough CDC - I took the "fluff" off one quill and then added in the tip too for good measure. I used the cdc for a thorax cover and the breathers out the top.

Or maybe the hook was too heavy. The rest of the dressing was just a tiny bit of dubbing and a pearly rib...

Any thoughts about what I'm doing wrong?

Cheers

Neil

Was it the b100 or the b110 hook?

T'was a B100. Realised the B110 would be unlikely to work but not sure if there's something lighter than B100 available.

i normally match the tips of 2-3 feathers and use those and have no problems with buoyancy

B100 should work. Use more than one feather 2-3. I never take the "fluff" off use the full feather. What quality is the cdc like?

Thanks guys. Have no idea what the quality of the CDC is like - never seen the stuff before! It's standard Veniard cdc if that 's any use. There's not a lot of info out there on how to use it, which is the problem I've got. I'll try 3 feathers and see how we go.

Excellent, thanks! My google didn't come up with that page for some reason. It's just exactly what I'm needing.

Theres more cdc step by steps on that site. Also if your after cdc the lakeland 100's are good for the price and lots of colours.

http://www.lakelandflytying.com/1548...lours_100.aspx

Or if your after top quality then Phil at fly tying boutique has some top Swiss cdc.

Cheers. Been prowling round that site and found the others. CDC is not the cheapest feather, eh?!
