Default Marabou Muddler

Here's a style for all you Muddler maniacs to try, if you haven't already. This particular one has done well for me over the last couple of seasons, especially early on in the season when greens, blacks, olives and a bit of flash are rarely ignored.
Don't be thinking about deploying this one on the top dropper with a floating line though.... it needs to get wet to work propperly and bring the best out of the marabou. It's happy on any line though and fished at any speed.

Hook: B175
Butt: Gold Holographic
Body: Gold lite-brite
Wing: 3 layers of marabou - Yellow Peril / Medium olive / Dark olive.
Overwing: A couple of thin strands of pearly stuff.
Shoulder Hackle: Furnace Hen
Head: 'Hot Olive' deer hair (Artifly)

Maybe me and Wee Jimmy, but are we wrong in thinking this small, sparse muddler head thing is intrinsically wrong, or are we just dinosaurs?

Right or wrong Stan, yer still both dinosaurs

I've chewed this over with Jim, who has always had a penchant for the denser, golf ball style head, on more than one occasion... and still never come to any conclusions! Maybe the denser style does shift more water, I do feel though that there can be more to a muddler though than just causing a fuss. The smaller, sparser, more 'airy' style, by virtue of its wayward fibres, trapped gas, space and movement brings to mind that explosion of life, light and flailing appendages to be seen on many a waterborne critter. The dense approach rules out most of these attractions. Then there's the confidence thing Stan... from the very first time I dressed a muddler, the golf ball just felt and looked wrong... or maybe I just kidded myself that my messy fledgling efforts were better, more attractive
I'll stick with my bullsh!t theories for now though Stan - I like the look, it makes me happy, and that's 99% of the job.
