Watch what your buying, when regarding bobbin holders, I thought I was doing well I purchased four from E Bay with Ceramic tips I ended up binning them, they kept breaking the thread, maybe this is one flytying tool its worth spending a bit on, im sure forum members will keep you right which ones are best, I can't remember the make of the ones i now use.

Scooter,

Firstly, what type of bobbin holder do you have at the minute? metal? ceramic? or plastic?

Shine a torch down the bobbin holder and see if there are any snags that might catch the thread, i used a wee bit of sandpaper on my metal one and removed the snag.

I dont know about anyone else but in my opinion a bobbin holder shouldnt be realy stiff, I manipulate the legs of mine so that the thread will come on the spool as i am tying without the need to stop and wind more off each time.

I have bought 5 bobbin holders off ebay and as Joe says be careful! I originally bought 2 ceramic lined bobbin holders and they were a nightmare, i use them for thread for lures where fray thread can be covered up but for my buzzers, nymphs and wets I use Talon ceramic which the bobbin holder part where the thread goes is fully ceramic. I got them on ebay for I think 5 quid each and I love them.

I have also used C+F ones which are fantastic in my opinion as my friend has one but I cant bring myself to part with £25 for one!

Shop around and if any ppl you know that fly fish and tie their own flies, then ask them for a go using theirs to get a feel for what you would like cause it can be wasted money, I wasted £10 on the original bobbin holders from ebay

Chris

Buy a tiemco ceramic one. This will last you a lifetime. There are better ones on the market by a company CR enterprises. These have a finer tube of ceramic, this enables you to wind closer to the hook. They are pricey though..around £26. So buy a tiemco, you wont go wrong. BTW nobody will just give you one! Anybody got one of these fine diameter tube ones for me........free of course.....come on.......somebody...???

My advice would be If your going to buy cheap ones, get metal tubed, not ceramic. If you get a bad ceramic one all you can do is bin it, you won't be able to remove any sharp edges or burrs. With a metal one, you can at least polish the bore with a pipe cleaner and some t-cut. I know everyone says get ceramic, but I don't think they make that much difference (and metal ones don't squeek)

I use the Rite bobbin holder, £15 from Sportfish. Its a bit fiddly if you swap threat a lot, I tend to use mine for black.

I'll be looking for a couple more when I go to the BFFI show, I'll see if there's any deals.

Cheers

Andy
