Default Spiders for Winter Rainbows

These slightly larger Spiders patterns have been great for Winter Rainbows - The last few winters they have accounted for many a bow
Click the image to open in full size.

All Size 12's - Fish a single spider on a 14ft Flourocarbon Leader and a slow retrieve.
If the Rainbows are showing a 14ft Nylon Leader will be fine.

HOLD ON TIGHT

Just simple tyings but very effective.

Nice Flees,
There's an Angler who fishes my local water, for rainbows, and when they are in the top layer, up to four inches down has had great success using Spider Patterns,
They appear to be a much under used Fly for bows, and should be fished more, as they do work.

What sort of hackle feathers are you using for these Col? I reckon some size 12's might be a handy step on the the road to tying neat Spiders for the river in 14's and 16', once I get the hang of bigger sizes.

There's room for confusion with this "Spiders" thing as the same name is also used for 8-legged flexi-floss creatures similar to an Apps Bloodworm. I asked a chap what he was using the other week and he said "Spiders", and I said "that's interesting, I only use them on the river, what colour?" and he said "green one" but I heard "Greenwells" (it was windy, he was 20yds away). Then I saw him ripping it back at top speed and inducing huge bow-wave follows, and converting them, including a beautiful 7lb Brownie, so I investigated further and saw it was a lime-green flexi-floss worm. I've also seen them referred to as "Northern Spiders", which further adds to the confusion.

Nice ties, and I must try some spider patterns for Stillwater rainbows next time I'm out.

Just simple Veniards Cock Hackles - I think it was sportfish I got them.

The Orange fellow does very well indeed in the summer as well on a long leader.

Hope you enjoy your winter bow fishng.

the spider patterns are a very underated stillwater fly, i would add one more to col's above and thats the stewarts back spider ,a very effective fly on rivers and still water ...
