Default Scratch Snatcher & Ruthenflyfishers Hog

Here's my go at a snatcher that Scratch suggested, there is some sparkle in the dubbing, it does'nt show up very well in the photo. I think I need to either get some finer floss, or use thread.

And a half hog from one of Gerry's posts from a few weeks back. I used biots 'cos I don't have any dyed jungle cock and think they give it a really demonic look.

Comments greatfully received.

Steve
Very very nice, think I would change the biot colour to maybe Sunburst instead of what you have used and make it a wee bit shorter in length as it is very similar in colour to the hackle and when the fly gets wet and the hackle shrouds the fly it will be hard for the biot to stand out, but that is just me being fussy.
Keep em coming.
Cheers
Gerry

Lovely tying Steve! Glad you had a go at that snatcher... not sure about the general feel of the colour-scheme though, especially the orange floss with the chartreuse wire. I'd go with silver or twisted pearl. The body hackle looks good again... I can't tell exactly what colour it is, but it seems neutral enough. I'd carry that through to the head hackle aswell.

Yer hog is a beauty too... have to agree with Gerry about the biots though... In red, it's bit pointless them being there. I's swap for sunburst too, or perhaps some JC splits? There's something very tasty about red holo over peacock isn't there. Not sure if the fish like it, but it's very satisfying to tie

They love it in Diawl Bach form, so I suspect this hog will go down a treat also.

The Hog is very, very similar to the Hell's Half-Hog, which uses red holo as cheeks and is an excellent early season pattern.

Two nice ties.

Not criticisms, just preferences on my part. I would twist the holo into a rope before ribbing. I like to see a bigger percentage of herl to tinsel. Also, the rope lasts longer than the flat tinsel when chewed up by fish.

I agree with Gerry on the biot. I prefer a distinct thorax on my HH's, with the biot just protruding past the thorax. Generally I tie my wings in slightly heavier, with two bunches of hair and wraps of seals fur dubbed thread over the roots.

I have never tied them with hackles, but I like the look of it, so will be giving that a go as well.

Nicely done.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.

On the hog, I agree with all the comments on the biots, I cut them shorter after the photo, and will have to try some sunburst ones next. I’ll also try with another bunch of deer for the wing, I did dub over the butts but it isn’t obvious in the photo. I like the idea with twisting the tinsel into a rope, I’ll definitely try that. It proved itself as a fish catcher today, had a browny about 2lb this morning on it (sorry no pics as it had to go back so I didn’t want to fanny around getting the camera).

On the snatcher, the hackle is olive, and the head hackle is one of Gerry’s cruncher specials which is yellowy green. It looks a bit washed out in the photo and greener in real life, hence the chartreuse rib which doesn’t look too bad, honest . This one let the side down , and despite being thrashed around for an hour didn’t even get a sniff so it’s been sent to the naughty box until it bucks it’s ideas up.

Cheers again, Steve
