Default Claret Snatcher

I need to keep practising my palmering, especially on snatchers where it seems to go wrong as I go around the bend. For every good one, I get 3 bad at the moment (this is one of my good ones BTW). It's a very dark claret, looks a nice deep red when backlit though, the colours are about right even if the focus is a bit iffy on the head hackle.

Any comments greatfully received

Steve,

I think it looks pretty good, technique looks good.

I would just alter the proportions and shorten it a little, start the tag nearer where it currently finishes, this will make it easier to tie and look a little better.

Cheers for the comments Ben, I do get a bit carried away on curved hooks and go too far round the bend, its a lot easier on a straight hook where you just stop at the barb

I will definately try shorter to see how they look.

Thanks

Steve

Hi WF, I like the hackling, nice job there. The wire is a little thick for my tastes, and another personal preference of mine is for the JC splits under the hen hackle rather than over it. Minor niggles though and like I say, just down to taste. A nicely tied and eminently fishable fettling of fur and feather

Thanks for the comments Snatch.

The wire is a little thick, It's Veniards "Medium" I think. They didn't have any other sizes in the shop will have to have a look out for some thinner.

I have noticed that you put the splits under the hen hackle, after tying these up I think I know why, the splits really squash down the hackle at the sides, giving it a funny profile from the front - you live and learn.

Cheers - Steve

As Scratch says, still a very nice fly and there will be times when the thicker wire will actually assist you, if you have to get down a little deeper. It will catch fish no doubt about it and well done.

Your hackling is good,I find the better hackles you use the
more consistant you can be.

The head hackle you have pointed out yourself and the tag being a little too far round the bend has also been pointed out (Something I am prone too). The hackling looks technically good to me, but I lean towards much lighter hackling for Snatchers - This however is a matter of taste. You might want to try a few with the leading edge of the hackle stripped of fibres (I don't think you have done this).

I don't mind the JC being on the outside, but I would go for one a little shorter, that still shows a little of the black at the tie in point.

Definately a fly heading in the right direction.
