Default holographic tinsel

HI,
I have just bought some red and green holographic tinsel. Is it normal for the finish to come of and show silver underneath if you scratch it lightly with your nail?I dont know the make sorry.

It usually does have very thin plastic over it. I find it doesn't make any difference to the effectiveness of the stuff. It will be stronger and more durable against trout teeth with the plastic cover on. Plus it will help stop any scratches showing the silver base layer.

The colour should obviously not come off and reveal the silver underneath but in some brands it does, the only one i find not to do it is UTC tinsels

Where and when did you get your last spool of red Barry? It's 'solid' is it?

I have had the same problem with the UTC stuff. When tying red holo cormorants I have been adding a coat of HAN over the body, letting it dry then finish off the fly. Does anyone know where you can get the deep red holo not like the new stuff they are producing.

i use a red prismatic tinsel from lureflash and a silver holographic mylar tinsel from the 'US', both are virtually identical to the holographic tinsels and i cant say ive experienced any of the problems reported here. I believe they are plastic based and as such, single layer.
