Default hooks

What determines the size of hook,is it the size of gape? The reason i ask what might be a daft question i have a box of mixed hooks hundreds of the bl**dy things but i aint got a clue what size or even what make they are,any advice? Thanks.

I've always believed that hook size is determined by gape, got complicated when wide gape hooks became available, isn't for example a wide gape 14 really a short shank 12?

Anyway, if you have a look here http://www.spartonfly.co.uk/Flies_an.../hardware.html there is a photo of a hook gauge. Something like this would probably help you
