Default online tying club

i was thinking ,, why don't we have our own online tying club for over the close season , which could be held once or twice a week and involve fly history and origin ,,also like many other clubs we could have a select amount of flies to be tied over the closed season ,,and with that flies would be marked by a points system , in which at the end of the club season would result in a winner ,,and this in turn could involve the said winner being presented with some sort of trophy which he-she would hold onto until the start of the next club season.

i for one would like to see this happen as their are some stunning tiers on here and to be able to look forward to their wares would be something that would help to get me and many other through the close season ,,, please tell me what you guys think of this idea before i put it to admin.

A Nice Idea UFM,

What about just setting a 'topic fly' for a specific week, or fortnight...

A Diawl Bach say, picturing an Original, or near as dammit, and a couple of variants on show....With a little history to the pattern, favourite methods, best catches etc.....

Then, people can post their attempts, or simply ask questions on how to improve their efforts, if they feel that they want to post them that is.

As for the 'competitive' side of the idea, maybe a bit too much? Just my opinion mind.

Clubs, FDG etc, tend to meet to learn, inwardly digest and improve on their techniques etc, not to win trophies....

Carl

I like the idea, however what puts me off about this club is the fact that you say 'meet once a week or fortnight', i work shifts and also get stuffed with last minute overtime etc. which sort of rules me out of a set time.

Does it need to have a set time? why not a forum category on its own where people tie to specific topics posted weekly and feedback any info they have or experiences on the 'fly of the week' so to speak.

just a few thoughts, it is a good idea and a reckon you'll get good support on here what ever is decided.

Chris

I think it's a great idea, I tried something similar last year with the 'Classics' threads and learn't a great deal.
Prizes are not necessary to get me to contribute, but if it encouraged a few more people to contribute it would be worth it!

Sorry if I'm missing something here UFM, but isn't this section basically an online tying club? Doesn't it by and large throw up all the 'features' you are talking about? Take Ben's 'Classics' series for example. Competitions too crop up from time to time. Fly swaps etc... Not to mention the countless flies posted and the ensuing cross-polination and batting around of ideas. I think all we need is a few more folk to get pro-active rather than at best, reactive.
Now the season is drawing to a close, I think you'll see the tying section step up a gear or two. I'll do me bit and get a comp going if you like?

P.S. I'm also struggling with yer concept of meeting 'once or twice a week' or whatever.

I really like the idea and I agree that you could do it using threads. If popular we might even get Admin to give us a section for it, sorry I know some think we have too many sections only. I used to be in the FDG and I learned a lot because I was encouraged to tie flies that I might normally avoid and thus miss out on a technique.

I'd suggest we tie up with some of the tying suppliers to ensure that they have stock of materials for the pattern on offer. When we tied certain patterns in the FDG we'd sometime struggle to get good quality materials, this was in the days before the internet. They could make some sales and we would have good gear to tie the patterns. Might be worth seeing what the likes of Gerry Artifly think.

Cheers

Andy

A very good idea as i agree there are some very talented tiers on here, that could pass on information/techniques and solutions to tying problems.

i think i have been taken wrongly here as i did not mean that we were to meet ,what i meant was like was said ,,we could arrange a set list of patterns to be done over the winter and have the nights that we will be doing these set out on the calender and during this people can add what knowledge they know about a certain fly or think y=they know as Ive found out quite allot that i really know nothing as some patterns really have a deep history to them .

i intend for this all to be done on-line on the forum!!!!!!!

Scratch said.

i do get what you mean scratch and yes their is allot of the said proposals already in place ,be it scattered about,
i just thought this would be fun for people and would help beginners to get involved in trying new patterns etc!!!

i may do a poll on this to see if we get more intrest .

You'll find very few flies invented after 1990 in my fly box.
I somehow still manage to catch plenty of fish though!
