Default What is a professional fly tyer

I have been wondering about this for a while now. What is a Professional Fly tyer? I asked a few people a while ago and all have given different answers, some quite bizarre.

My understanding is someone who sells their flies to the trade, basically their occupation. Would I be correct or is there more to it?

Also who tells someone they are a professional tyer or is it the tyer who gives himself the title?

Many thanks in advance

Alan

I too have tossed around this notion......the one question is? one who sells flies would be considered a comerical tier, right?

by adding a person to a Fly Tying Corporation Pro Team....wouldn't that be the same as being a Professional Tier?

I really don't think there is a written standard or bench mark that qualifies one as a professional

Someone who does it as their main employment to pay the mortgage and all the other bills.

Gerry has hit it on the head.

I always think in terms of sportspeople - an "amateur" plays for fun, a "professional" plays for money.

I gave up my day job 3 years ago to tie flies full time to earn money to pay the bills.

I think that makes me a professional fly tyer.

Kind regards

Surely, a professional fly tyer is a person who ties flies for a living, the same as any other professional in any trade...

Just out of curiosity Phil , How many flies do you tie on average in a good day.

Default professional or amateur?

I agree with Phil, I tie flies for cash, but I do do lots of other things too. I think at my busiest you could call me commercial but never "profesional". In a good year 10% of my income comes from flies.

As to who gives you that title, well anyone can pretend to be an expert in any field, however in this game you're only as good as your reputation and I'm sure anyone who claims to be professional but doesn't have the output of Phil or other top names will soon be found out.

And if you think making a living form fly fishing is easy..he he he he,
I sold over £500 of materials to a one man band last year and so far i've not seen a single fly of his hit the market.

Cheers
