Don't bother - save yourself a few hundred quid & use Veniards killer bug yarn instead.
Once you've put the copper wire underbody on & one neat layer of the Veniards yarn over, you get exactly the same effect once wet.

The only way I'd buy any was if I could get hold of a full card for less than £100. Then I'd sell it unused in 10 year's time for maybe double or triple that.

Tom,

What makes you think that you are not sure?

You are right to think that it is rare - Chadwicks stopped making wool about 35 years ago when the factory burned down.

Cards of genuine 477 sell for £40/50/60 upwards at auctions - but there are various substitutes available that are close to the original.

The 477 changes colour when wet - takes on a pinkish hue which the subs do not do ... but I don't think it matters to the fish.

The sub wool sold by Veniard is a close match to the genuine 477 - or splash out on the real stuff if you ever see it available.

(Oops - sorry - typed this at the same time that Steve posted his reply)

Kind regards

Actually the Veniard's killer bug yarn does turn a slight pinkish shade in the water.
I think it has to do with a very slight translucency with the copper underbody when you use a single layer of yarn over.

Hi Tom, yes it's pretty rare, it does come up occasionally on ebay, and fetches ridiculous prices.
I recently found a box of sewing related materials in a local charity shop, and amongst it was seven full cards of the original Chadwicks wool, unfortunately none of them were 477.
I bought them all for 50p each, as they were nice suttle colours, and may come in handy.
I also told the lady in the shop to keep her eyes peeled for a card of 477, and said I would make a hefty donation to the charity if she found one.
I did hear that every demob suit had a card of 477 in the top pocket, for darning purposes, so ask around, must be some somewhere.
