Default Killer Bug Help

Hi guys

Could anyone help me with which copper wire use for sawyers' killer bug and PTN. He states red coloured transformer wire is best, but i don't know where to get this from. Any ideas?

Cheers

Richard

Richard,

When Mr. Sawyer designed the pattern, he did not have the benefit of flytying materials shops or Maplins ...

If you want a small spool, then try Fly Only Online:

http://www.britnett-carver.co.uk/flyonly/prods/99.html

Or Lakeland Flytying:

http://www.lakelandflytying.com/2480...ltra_Wire.aspx

If you want a large supply, then Maplins sell a whole range of coloured copper wires.

Kind regards

I tie these bugs a lot. They are great for use in stalking.
You should just use the fine copper wire from somewhere like Tom Saville's in conjunction with the Veniards killer bug yarn.
This looks virtually identical to Chadwick's 477 when wet & is a darn sight easier on the pocket!

I tie these in sizes 10 & 12 as follows:

Tie on the copper wire at the bend & take up to just 1mm before the eye and then back down again, all with touching turns. Overlap the point at where you started the copper & clip off the tag with a pair of stout scissors.
Next, tie the yarn in on itself at the eye with a tag long enough to reach just before the bend. Wind a single layer of yarn neatly over the body with the tag end trapped on top of the hook shank. This gives the fly a superb buggy appearance.
Tie in the yarn at the bend with 2 tight turns of copper wire, then do a 3 turn hand whip finish on-the-spot, so that you can see 3 or 4 neat turns of copper thread as a tag at the start of the bend.
Trim the copper off close as possible with the stout scissors and the yarn with fine-point scissors.
Finally, apply a small dot of superglue to the knot of the whip finish, avoiding touching any yarn.
This will be a remarkably durable, killing fly.

You probably have it at home ,do you have a dead peice of electrical equipment, like a small motor or phone dharger, break the offendig item open and look for the wiring.
I have several lifetimes supply from and old leccy shaver, good for PT and killer bugs and much more!

Steve,
strange you go for such big Killer bugs ,I find I tend to use 14 as a big one and go down to 18s , possibly because the shrimp on the bit of the Kennet I fish tend to be in that size range .

I'm using them for small stillwater stalking purposes.

The trout love 'em although I must admit size 10 is useful (not least for visibility purposes when inducing a take 3 feet down & 15 yards away) but a 12 is probably my favourite size.
