Default orvis tying thread

Just been trying to tie some buzzers up useing orvis tying thread 8/0 just cannot seem to get on with it, now it might be my cr*p tying techniques.I have been useing utc and uni thread with no problems. With the orvis i have had trouble with it slipping off the hook when i start, then it seems to slip off the materials when i am doing the whip finnish, and the finished fly is covered with loads of wispy bits sticking out from the fly anybody else had this problem with the orvis thread or is it just me?

Orvis don't make thread, or for that matter hardly anything to do with fly tying. They market it & often because of their distribution network wholesale many "new" items for their first year or so. If the product is successful they will continue selling it & the makers will also do the same
It helps the makers/importers get an established base in the marketplace with these products. The thread you mention may well come from Wapsi, UTC, Gudebrod or any other maker. At the moment, only UTC 70/140 is the only thread made solely for fly tying, EVERYTHING else has been taken from a pre-existing market.

Personally I'm not a fan of UTC, as it does not do things the way I want it to, a bit like you with the Orvis labelled thread. It does have a lot of fans however, I suppose it's like milk & plain chocolate or Marmite. Without more detail, it's difficult to say if it's the same stuff, but the way you describe it seems very similar to what I find with the UTC threads.

Orvis thread is bonded just like Unithread - in fact I will bet it is simply repackaged Unithread.

I'm surprised you don't like UTC. Of course, it is very different from Unithread and suited for different uses. (The 140 is good for saltwater tying.)

UTC is a nylon thread & has some very good colour options in its range, but for my style of tying it flattens to easily & when it does, its almost sheer finish it has greatly reduces the amount of gripping power it should have. I don't like to spend lots of time spinning bobbin holders to improve the grip.

Danville's is also a nylon thread & like UTC it's virtually untwisted, but it has a much heavier waxed finish so it gets around these problems without the need; in most cases to add more wax. The colour range is different & more subtle in a lot of cases as well. Danville's was the first man made fibre thread I used, in the days when it was sold by "Herb Howard" & it was a revelation when compared to "Gossamer & Naples", I bought it from Thom Saville's around the time when he introduced the first spiggot bobbin holders.

Davy Wooton reckons that if he had to choose just 1 thread to work with then it would have to be Danville's, I must admit I agree with him on that statement as it's the most universal of threads.

But heavy at 6/0, no? I use all three, picking amongst them depending on what I'm doing.

I don't think it's you H50. I got some 10/0 about 8 yrs ago from Bakewell and it was as you describe, multi strand thread, definitely not bonded as per Uni-Thread, not as durable as UTC in fact it was awful. Bin it and move on.
