I think its fine but if you line up the deer hair in a stacker before tying in each bunch, you will be able to control the wing length much better...

Nowt wrong with that for your first attempt will defo take fish. A couple of points that may help is firstly have you used dyed deer belly hair as opposed to dyed Roe? as the deer belly tends to be longer with much finer tips that are harder to line up. Hair stackers are also usefull for lining up the tips and saves a lot of the footery stuff, I use the stonefly stacker, very simple and the way it swings out enables you to hold the deer hair by the tips when knocked up.
Will put up a step by step of me red arsed hedgehog tomorrow that may help you further.
Cheers
Gerry

If you don't have a hair stacker, just use a bit of tube about 25mm long and 8mm inside diameter, stand the tube on your table, pop the bunch of hair into the tube tips first, give it a wiggle and there you go.
