Default Hares Ear help!

I have decided to buy the materials to tie up some Hare's Ear goldheaded nymphs and was wondering if it was better to buy a packet of hares ears dubbing or would it be better to buy a hares mask?

If i did decide to buy the Mask how and where do i get the fibres from which to dub with from on the mask?

Thanks in advance

Roeboy

Have a wild guess

Many of the old 'Hare's Ear' dressings called for exactly that... the gear from the ear. It's mostly short fibred though and a bu66er to get off. If you do go for the ear gear, then try the stuff from the base first... longer fibres and relatively easy to get off. Most of the hair from around the mask is useful and may indeed suit the look of your nymph better. All depends how you envisage and want your nymph to look.

Most people use hare body fur in place of hare's ear. A lot of tyers secretly always have done!

The fur from the ear is difficult to get in a decent amount in the correct shade for many patterns. It's also far too short to tease-out from the sides of the thorax with a dubbing needle to get the correct effect for the GRHE nymph for a size 10 or 12 dressing.

I mix roughly equal parts of the body fur guard hairs, the black underfur & the brown/light grey underfur to get just the right "buggy" look to my GRHE nymphs, as in the 2 on the front left here:

Definitely use a body fur patch instead - it's called a trick of the trade!

Veniard's do a loose hares fur mix in both natural & dyed colours, saves lots of time & is very "buggy" with a high proportion of guard hairs in it.

It's quite alright to use the fur from a body patch for the GRHE nymph, but if you tie the GRHE dry fly you need the guard hair hackles from the base of the ear, they float a lot better...

I use squirrel dubbing, it's spiky, the set I have is in a range of lovely.

I know its cheating, but it works for me.

I would buy both, a mask and a body piece - from both of these u will be able to tie a range of nymphs in various shades. Inexpensive and versatile u should be able to produce many flies from them.

I use PT fibres for the tail, then I bring the thick part of the PT up to the thorax and use it for the wing casing, hope you can understand that, I can't, but I know what I mean...

And I use (brown) speckled hen for the tail so you have some flex. For a good SBS see here:
