I find David Cammiss's series of videos very helpful an absolute beginner like me.

Some use a rabbit fur dubbed thorax too, or even another section of PT, or even peacock herl

I like to use pearl tinsel for my thorax

You can get away with the thread, pheasant tail, copper for rib and varnish. Use the pheasant for both tail and body if you like, I am sure there is a very good SBS in the fly tying section of forum. Also a version of the PTN by Buzz which is excellent now i come to think of it.

Concentrate on neatness, (distinction - a buggy looking fly is one thing, and a good thing, thread and bits sticking out all over the place another) and good proportions as per the patterns you are following and make lots of the same fly before you move on. I am still pretty poor tying wise but i cringe when I look back on first efforts that I was proud of at the time, as I just did not practice enough of the same pattern.

Above all enjoy, and fish them. Fish aren't half as critical with their eye as we are. There are some excellent tiers here who will help you tweak and fine tune in time.
