Default Polypropelene

Is anyone aware of the use of polypropelene in flytying? Saw a video on youtube last night of an American using it. I would be keen to experiment with it during the winter.
Thanks

It's usually used on dry flies

It's way less dense that water, and hydrphobic?? I believe, so it floats really well

It is sometimes used for parachute/klinhammer hackle stalks.
Shipmansa buzzer breathers

I sometimes use it as an under body on my thorax to make the fly sit nicer.
Put a layer down, or even just tie it along the shank, dub over it and bingo.

probably lots of uses but the one i am most familiar with is polyprop floating yarns for posts in klink type patterns etc to wrap a hackle around and make it bouyant.

Some brands of Polypropelene yarn are advertised as being hollow. Tiemco make one but its quite expensive when compared with "normal" yarn.

I bought some poly yarn from Philip Maher's tackle shop in Ireland a couple of years ago. I think I paid two Euro's for it and its lasted ages. I don't know if he does mail order.

As for uses, I use it for posts as the others suggest and for the breathers on Shipmans Buzzers. I've also used it for wings on spinners and spent mayfly patterns.

I keep the small bits trimmed from posts and dub it to make a bodies on big flies. It is hard to dub but the resulting flys are very bouyant and can be used in rough water without sinking.

Thanks everyone. Will get the yarn..I can get a very ready supply of polypropelene thread and use it instead of UTC etc for tying. It is used extensively in surgery, especially when sewing in arteries. Have been using it for 30 years.

I have some in a flat floss and use it for wings on midges. Also used for winging spent olives etc. The yarn is straight compared to the poly yarn used for klink post.

Look up a fly on youtube called the sharks caddis, great idea for a body.

From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.
