Best advice I can give is to get a cheap fly tying tool set, from ebay or tackle shop, and upgrade as you progress, you can also get material starter kits which will get you started.

You will need to get, Bobbin holder--For thread
Hackle pliers-- For winding your Hackles
Scissors (Straight-Sharp) For cutting material
Scissors (curved-Sharp) " " " " "
Dubbing needle (you can make this Needle in a cork)
Bottle of good Malt ( Self Lubrication )

There are loads more stuff, that you will aquire as you go along, but this is the very basic you will need apart from some material to start.I personaly think good scissors are a must have. Capes are better than loose feather where possable. And good thread saves a lot of swearing. And patience is a must

Material will depend on what type of fishing you are doing, and what flies you need, but you should be able to get all you need from the trade guys,on hear and know you will not be ripped off.

Happy tying, Enjoy

Hope this is of help T.K...............

Good luck muro08,
I took my first fly-tying steps in the last few days. I bought a cheap set off eBay but have since bought a load of decent hooks, fritz, threads, wires, beads etc. as the selection that came with it were poor. It helps if you know someone who already ties, because not only can they help you get started, they will almost certainly have a mountain of materials from which they can spare a few feathers and fur (Cheers Noeyedeer! ).

The David Cammiss series of SBS videos on YouTube are perfect for new recruits like us. He starts with a simple black buzzer and works up from there.

So far I've made fairly passable versions of blobs, buzzers, daddies, a cats whisker, a goldhead fritz and some Diawl Bachs that didn't quite turn out right and look more like PTNs, but hey, it's all part of the learning process.

My most ambitious tie so far is this Blue and Teal Daddy, It didn't turn out exactly as I planned, and it's the wrong shaped hook but I think it has potential. A Blue-****ed (crane)fly anyone?

Have fun creating!

That daddy will leave a lovely impression on the water surface, in the right conitions it will catch a lot of fish, and there is no better feeling then catching on something you made yourself.

i would stay away from kits if you can ,they often contain materials you may never use, decide what type of fishing your going to be doing ie rivers or stillwaters ,decide which flies you would like to tie for that ,and purchase individual materials for the purpose of the flies you wish to tie, if your unsure you can have a look on the SBS forum on here, or have a look here
www.diptera.co.uk ,you will need

bobbin holder/s (if possible ceramic tipped or lined these will last you forever or there abouts)

a bobbin threader (makes life easy)

decent scissors (buy the best you can afford and they will last ie dr slicks etc if you can)

hackle pliers

dubbing needle (any large needle will do you for now)

a whip finish tool ( the mattarelli style is the ones i use with the rotating handle ,makes life easier as well, but not a necessity)

varnish or head cement to finish off the tying

storage for materials ,something like tupperware boxes will do you for now, keep materials in there individual packets.

protection for the materials to stop them getting destoyed by mites etc you will need some napthalene crystals, just sprinkle a few crystals into each material packet ,or you can get moth balls and break them up and place into each packet

thread always get good quality thread fit for the purpose ,theres nothing worse than nearly finishing your fly then the thread breaks.

hope this is helpful for you, dont think ive missed anything ,but im sure the lads and lasses will say so if i have .

Dependant on where you live/fish see if there's a branch of www.the-fdg.org near to you. If so contact the secretary & you'll find that he'll fall over himself trying to help you.
