Default My first Blobs...

Now be kind please, these are my very first Blobs, indeed very first flies, tied on Noeyedeer's vice after a snatched 30 min lesson over lunch today. A well respected member of this forum recommended some Black Blobs for my imminent trip to Pennine (gear box repairs permitting). I hope they don't fall apart before they catch a fish. As well as three straight Leaded Black Blobs I tied these variants.

Hooks: Fulling Mill 31510, size 6
Thread: Black Unithread 6/0
Lead: Medium wire (6-10 turns)
Body:Veniards 15mm Cactus Chennile

Leggy Black Blob:

Viva Blob:

Bumble Bee Blob: (mixed black and orange cactus)

First attempt at photographing flies too, the Macro focussing is not great on my compact and I was losing the light.

Cheers Steve,
yours are a lot tidier than mine, for sure! My car's back from the garage so I will be off to Pennine in the morning to test them in a "live-firing exercise".

I've fished Blobs with Flash and Marabou tails but had nowhere near the success as the unadorned orange ones.

I'm hoping to tie a few more variants round at Noeyedeer's tonight. I'll try to get the heads tidier.

Cheers Alimar,
my fingers are stained black from doing that already. Tidier maybe, not tidy yet. Do the fish care? I'll find out soon enough.

I used to have a fast arm Fred, broke a stump or two in my time, but this just isn't Cricket. Are we talking Roly-Poly here? Ah well, there'll be few purists to offend at Pennine.

Hi,

take a look at this thread if you are looking to tidy up your blobs.

I was having problems until I got a few gems of advice from the likes of Still Water and UK Fly fishing.

If you can't be bothered reading it all, just try what they told me. give the fritz a good wetting. then pull it through your fingers to remove excess water. In the case of the Vampire plush which I've been using I found that its a bit like a cock hackle in that if you pull it through your fingers one way the fibers stand out and the other they lay flatter. You want the tie it in do that that it you were to put you finger and thumbs by the hook and slide them down the fritz it will lay flat.

The other piece of advice was not put pack the turns in too much. What I've found it by not doing tight touching turns the fritz lats back more. I suspect this will allow the fritz more movement in the water and also the flatter profile leave the hook gape open. In fact you even get away with smaller hooks.

Here's some while I was getting my head around the techniques (apparently the tails need trimming)

And here's one which it a little tidier

Good luck and have fun.

I'm liking that last one - even better I've already got some yellow and some orange biots to play with too
